Bach Artist Bryan Bourne Trombone Tips & Tricks

Bach artist Bryan Bourne explains how to properly position the trombone to get the best sound out as a player moves the hand slide for different notes.

Bryan Bourne has recently retired from the "The President's Own" United States Marine Band after nearly 30 years of active service. The last 23 years he was the band’s Principal Trombone. In that capacity he performed in the Marine Concert Band, solo trombone with the White House Orchestra and many of the Chamber Music Concerts. Bryan also performed in many of the PBS specials “Music at the White House,” which features many of the country’s finest artists from many different musical genres. He was a featured soloist on many concerts including 6 Concert tours amassing over a total of 200 solo performances. He is principal trombone with the Washington Concert Opera, the Chesapeake Orchestra and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and was principal trombone with the RAI Orchestra in Turin, Italy. He is second trombone with the Baltimore Opera Orchestra. He has performed with the Kennedy Center Opera and Ballet Orchestras and the National Symphony Orchestra.

While in the Marine Band, Bryan was very involved in the educational outreach development. Performing as part of the “Music in the Schools” program as well as master classes throughout the country, while “on tour” during the Marine Band’s annual 50 day concert tour. Bryan Bourne has taught low brass (trombone, euphonium, and tuba) at St. Mary's College of Maryland since 1990. At St Mary’s College he also conducts the Brass Choir, Trombone Choir and coaches the brass chamber groups. Many of his students have gone to many of our fine universities and conservatories as well as orchestras and military bands.
